Dutch Street Photographer Acquired Rare Photo Album at Rijksmuseum

A Dutch Street Photographer acquired a rare photo album for $21,250 in a New York auction. Ed van der Elsken made the artwork.

This untitled album contains up to 27 black and white photographs depicting Parisian street scenes. Moreover, it features the portraits of Dutch photographers Emmy Andriessen and Ata Kando. On March 11th, Elsken conducted a photography sale at Swann Galleries in New York. During that time, nearly 5 bidders participated in this auction.

As per the source, the artwork was estimated between $10,000 – $15,000. Curator Hans Rooseboom at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam bought it on behalf of the museum.

However, this untitled album beats his book of 99 photographs titled Crazy World. It remained created in 1962 as a source said that in November 2013, the Crazy world album sold in Haarlem, the Netherlands for $16,300.

According to the source, in June 2020, two museums plan to acquire the artist’s estate along with 10,000 photographic materials. However, those museums are Rijksmuseum and Nederlands Fotomuseum.

Swann’s 409-lot photography sale made up to $1.4 million. It means, nearly 82% sell-through rate. On the other hand, Dorothea Lange’s Migrant Mother sold for $63,800, and Irving Penn’s Tulip: China Pink, New York sold for $32,500.

Further, Dorothea Lange’s silver print Abandoned Tenant House, Hall County, Texas sold for $12,500. The artwork created in 1937. Alfred Stieglitz’s prints from Camera Work went for $16,300, and Francis Frith three volumes of Sinai & Arabia Petra, Jerusalem & Palestine, and Egypt & Athens were bought for $27,500 by institutions.
