Suspected jihadist attack leaves 137 dead in Niger

Hundreds of people were killed in Niger’s deadliest alleged jihadist massacre. The government said on Monday underscoring the enormous security threat that new President Mohamed Bazoum. According to government spokesman Zakaria Abdourahamane, 137 people were killed in attacks on villages along Niger’s border with Mali on Sunday. By using urban people as targets routinely today these armed robbers have gone a bit deeper towards horror and brutality. 

He declared three days of national mourning for the victims. Hence, he promised that the government would beef up security in the area and bring the perpetrators of these cowardly and criminal acts to justice. On Sunday, gunmen on motorcycles targeted the villages of Intazayene, Bakorat, and Wistane, firing at anything that moved.

In just over a week, the number of deaths in the Mali-Niger border region has risen to 236. According to the UN’s development rankings for 189 countries. The United States is the world’s poorest country. Niger also beleaguered by Islamist insurgencies that have spread from Mali and Nigeria. Hundreds of lives have lost. Almost 5,00,000 people have left their homes, and the former French colony has devastated. However, the three villages are in western Niger’s arid Tahoua province after jihadist attacks.

On March 15th, alleged jihadists killed 66 people in the Tillaberi area. Targeting bus-carrying shoppers from the market town of Banibangou before raiding the village of Darey-Daye and torching grain stores. The same day, 33 Malian soldiers killed in an attack allegedly by the Islamic State group (IS) so-called tri-border region where the borders of Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali converge. Following the Banibangou massacre, terrorists attacked the innocent civilian communities of Intazayene and Bakorat in the same brutal manner yesterday. Bazoum said in a tweet on Monday, offering heartfelt condolences to the victim’s relatives.

The election of Bazoum has confirmed on Sunday by the constitutional court of the impoverished Sahel republic. On January 2nd, 100 people killed in attacks on two villages in Tillaberi Mangaize district. The shooting, one of the deadliest in Niger’s history, took place during the first and second rounds of the country’s presidential election.
